Project Description:
Sound Design by Mene Achor // Video Below is an Alternate Version of Crochet Layers
Fashion, standing among the trio of major art forms – alongside Art and Architecture – deeply molds our human experience. It not only captures the threads of history and culture but also elevates our present, offering glimpses into the tapestry of potential futures. As our world hurtles into the throes of a digital revolution, the once clear boundaries between humanity and technology blur, extending our realities into uncharted territories, a complex array of emotions unfolds, fear, hope, anticipation, and anxiety. Navigating this uncharted terrain requires demystifying digital fashion, rendering it universally accessible. Acknowledging the unsustainability of traditional fashion, we champion innovative alternatives. only by Demystifying digital fashion from an exclusive niche to a universally understood concept, making it accessible to all, While Recognizing physical fashion as the conventional but unsustainable option, while advocating for the increased use and acceptance of innovative alternatives, can we bridge the gap between the two being to EmbracePhygital fashion as an eco-conscious revolution, fostering wider acceptance and engagement in the world of digital style.Resulting to the widespread adoption of phygital fashion and usher in a new age.
In this transformative journey, the core emphasis of our designs seeks to infuse Nigerian streetwear fashion with a rich tapestry of layers. A harmonious blend of crochet pieces, cotton, and tie-dye fabrics gives rise to outfits that transcend mere aesthetics. Delving into the intricacies of sustainability and climate adaptability, our creations resonate with Nigeria’s tropical climate while remaining rooted in timeless fashion trends. This holistic approach not only breathes new life into fashion but also resonates with a conscientious awareness of our impact on the environment.By creating this campaign video, we embark on this odyssey, weaving together the threads of tradition, innovation, and sustainability, we envision a future where Phygital fashion becomes a beacon of eco-conscious revolution.
Project Analysis & Challenges:
For me, this project was about tackling a really interesting tension. On one hand, I wanted to create something tangible and rooted, like actual wearable streetwear that makes sense for the climate here in Lagos. But on the other hand, I was obsessed with this bigger idea of "phygital" fashion and how our physical realities are blending with digital spaces. The main challenge was making sure these two sides didn't fight each other, but actually worked together.
I had to figure out how to make clothes that felt fresh and layered using techniques like crochet and traditional adire dyeing, while also building a whole world around them that speaks to a more digital, global future. It was a balancing act, honoring craft , culture and my multiple disciplines , without getting stuck in the past, and talking about tech and sustainability without losing the soulfulness of the garments. The biggest hurdle was weaving all these big concepts into a single, coherent story that feels authentic.
Project Details:
The BTS video shows the process of creating crochet layers. Fashion isn't just clothes, it's a way of capturing where we are as a society. Right now, that means exploring the mix of excitement and anxiety that comes with technology changing everything. I see "phygital" fashion as a way to make that future more eco-friendly and accessible to everyone, not just a niche group. This project was my first coherent attempt to bring that idea to life, from the stitches in the fabric to the digital world to the set design, it all points toward.
