ROOTS & RHYTHM - ILAJE FISH MARKET

This thesis reimagines the Nigerian fish market by integrating Yoruba vernacular architecture’s cultural symbolism, spatial principles, and climate response to foster community identity, economic vitality, and sustainable placemaking in Ilaje Bariga.

Project AIm & Significance:

  This project aimed to investigate how contemporary Nigerian fish markets can incorporate traditional Yoruba  vernacular architecture. The goal of the research is to determine how specific elements of Yoruba vernacular architecture, such as the consideration of climate and environment, layout and circulation and the incorporation of cultural symbolism, can be adapted to the particular requirements of a fish market in order to create a fish market design that is both culturally relevant and functionally effective.The specific objectives of the research includes;

  • The preservation of cultural identity.

  • The Socio-economic development of the area .

  • The Promotion of  cultural tourism in the area.

  • Community building.



Project Analysis & Challenges:

Ilaje- Bariga is a Low land area bounded by the Lagos lagoon on one side. The land has a sandy soil type, it is mildly sloped. There is also little or no vegetation around the site. The area is estimated to have a total population of about 3000 people. Ilaje Bariga is a slum settlement characterised by a lot of vices such as; 

  • Lack of proper drainages

  • Flooding,

  • Abandoned and Dilapidated Buildings

  • Dying Fishing Community

  • Poor waste management

  • Improper Urban planning and unorganized road networks.

The proposed site is facing the sea with an 11,785.61SqM, bounded by the Ilaje Waterfront Jetty, Recreational park and the lagoon. The Baale’s palace is also located at the edge of the site.The design proposed to accommodate the local population (around 3,000 people) and neighbouring communities, and cater to external traffic from Lagos and visiting tourists (totalling approximately 11,000 people). The were 7 main considerations in taken into account which are;Porosity and Circulation, Vernacularity,  Cultural symbolism,   Integration with the Surrounding Environment,  Social Spaces and Community Engagement,  Climatic Factor and the Sea Levels.

Roots and Rhythm is an expression that represents our connection to the past, present and future. Roots represents the connection to the past and Rhythm the connection to our present moment which brings about a sense of belonging. The design seeks to emphasize a strong connection between the cultural, historical context, symbolic and vernacular architecture of the Ilaje (Yoruba) people, while also incorporating contemporary elements to create a design that is culturally relevant and functional design.

Project Summary :

 This thesis concentrates on identifying and examining the ways in which fish market design might be influenced by Yoruba vernacular architecture. In terms of place-making in Yoruba architecture, It discusses the historical context, symbolism, cultural significance, spatial organization, and layout of Yoruba vernacular buildings. It also emphasizes the significance of fishing as a trade in coastal yoruba regions.
